The North Wales Housing-run hostel is home to some eight residents whose stay is based on a period of up to two years, with the aim of supporting an eventual move back into independent living in their own home. Residents have joined to together to help transform Pendinas and have already revamped the living room with new décor, furnishings and artwork.
The residents choose the colour scheme collectively whilst two residents, both experienced decorators, have carried out the majority of the paint works. Now complete, what was once a relatively unused communal area is now a central hub of activity within the house which residents are keen to keep fresh and tidy.
Regular art and craft session are also being held at Pendinas where residents are taught various art-based methods and techniques. Completed pieces will be hung and displayed across the facility, for existing and future residents to enjoy.
Plans are also underway to transform the garden. Raised bedded areas will be used to grow vegetables and herbs, seeded and maintained by the residents whilst the paved area will benefit from new pots, plants, chairs and tables.
Else Lyon, manager at Pendinas said:
It’s fantastic to see the residents become so enthused and keen to be involved in changing the Pendinas environment. By making these small steps, our service users are clearly becoming proud of their home and are committed to maintaining it"
She added:
As well as encouraging their social and team building skills, these initiatives help prepare to make the move back into independent living.”
