Shared ownership is an alternative to renting and full ownership. It is particularly suitable for people with a regular income who want to buy their own home but cannot afford to do so. With shared ownership you buy a share of your home - generally, this is around 40 percent - and pay rent on the rest. Shared ownership does not mean that you share your home with someone else.
The total monthly costs of the rent and mortgage are lower than the cost of a mortgage needed to buy 100 percent of the same home. This is because shared ownership is supported by government money which reduces the rent.
We are dependant upon existing shared owners wishing to sell and move on. They have to inform us they want to sell, with their share then being notified to applicants on the waiting list. (There are no new properties coming into this scheme as it has been ended by Welsh Assembly Government in favour of HomeBuy. This Association does not receive the funding for HomeBuy scheme so we are unable to offer it at this time).
