Children create works of art in Maesgeirchen

Our recent half-term graffiti workshops in Maesgeirchen in Bangor resulted in some wonderful works of art for the local park, and some great school holiday memories for over 50 local children.

The event was organised by our Senior Neighbourhood Officer Iola Lewis and Resident Participation Co-ordinator, Iwan Evans.

Iola said:

“We had noticed the graffiti art boards decorating the community playground in Maesgeirchen were looking faded and falling apart.

“The idea came to us to bring in a local graffiti artist who specialises in children’s workshops and let the young people get involved in brightening up their park with some colourful new designs.”

Iwan said:

“We are always looking at ways to engage with residents and communities through events and activities.

“Workshops are a great way for young people to learn team skills and holding a free activity gives a helping hand to local families, as entertaining children on school holidays can become expensive.”

The free workshops were led by Andy Birch from ‘Dime One Griffiti’.

The event turned into a great community effort as the first day was too wet for the children to paint outside but local builder’s merchants Huws Gray came to the rescue and kindly donated large boards for Andy and the children to decorate in the community centre.

The sun shone on the second day and the workshops were held at the Fun Zone Park in Penrhyn Avenue, as originally planned.

Artist Andy Birch said:

“I’ve worked in Maesgeirchen quite a few times over the past years and it’s been lovely to interact with the next generation of budding artists. Both days were well attended and everyone got involved. Some of the young people enjoyed it so much, they attended all four sessions!

“As a group, including staff from NWH and Youth Services, we were able to paint 12 boards, producing 9 pieces of artwork for the Fun Zone.

“As always, it’s been a real pleasure to work with everyone at Maes G.”

The completed work has now all been erected in the park by our DLO team.

One mum Nicole commented:

“My son really enjoyed both sessions and wants to thank “the lovely helpful man” in his words, for helping him to take part.”

The event was organised in conjunction with Cyngor Gwynedd and Ieuenctid Gwynedd Youth.
