Benefits Changes

There are a number of changes to the benefits system being introduced over the next year. Some are mentioned below.

If you are worried or unsure whether a benefit that you receive is being replaced please contact the Rents Team on 01492 572727 or [email protected].

Universal Credit – a benefit for working age people

This benefit is being rolled out across the country and will replace a number of existing benefits. If you receive Housing Benefit for your rent, this will be paid direct to you instead of to North Wales Housing, so you will have to make an arrangement to pay your rent to them. Universal Credit will be paid monthly in arrears. Because of this we are suggesting that you start paying an amount to your rent account so that you have the first month’s rent covered in time for a switch to Universal Credit.

You will need a bank account to receive Universal Credit. If you need help opening one please get in touch on 01492 572727 or [email protected].

Benefit Cap

The benefit cap is a limit on the total amount of income from certain benefits a household can receive. If they receive more than the benefit cap allows then their Housing Benefit or Universal Credit will be reduced to the capped amount.

From Autumn 2016 the benefit cap will be set at:

  • £384.62 a week if you are a couple or have children
  • £257.69 a week if you are a single person

If you think that you may be affected by the benefit cap please contact us for help and advice to avoid your rent account falling into arrears.

Housing Benefit

From April 2016 Housing Benefit will no longer backdate a claim for more than 4 weeks. This means that if you fail to submit information for a new claim or do not apply promptly for Housing Benefit the claim will not be backdated more than 4 weeks. This may result in arrears increasing on your rent account. If you need any help with your Housing Benefit claim please contact us.
