Whitegate Road development marks expansion to Wrexham

Work has officially started on a new £1.5million social housing development in Wrexham, providing 12 new affordable rent homes in the area.

The development is the first development in the region for NWH, working in partnership with Wrexham Council.

Start of work on site was marked by an event organised by North Wales Housing, welcoming partners and local Councillors Mark Pritchard and Ian Roberts to find out more about the important development.

Paul Diggory, Chief Executive of North Wales Housing said:

We’re really excited to be starting this development in Wrexham. It marks an expansion for North Wales Housing and we look forward to working with Wrexham Council. It’s through close partnership working like this that we can improve the housing prospects of young local families.”

Positioned off Whitegate Road, Wrexham, the site has previously been used as a car park. The site will be transformed by NWH and appointed contractors K & C Group, providing 12 much needed homes, 6 x 2 bedroom houses and 6 x one bed flats, in the area.

Councillor Ian Roberts, Lead Member for Housing, Wrexham Council said:

Providing affordable housing that meets people’s needs and aspirations is a priority for the Council and this development will help towards meeting that priority.”

Residents Transform Disused Land into Wildflower Garden

North Wales Housing residents in Ffordd Eithinog and Lon Mieri in Bangor have transformed a disused piece of land into a wildflowers and a meadow garden.

There was overwhelming support for the project when residents were asked what they would like to see on this land.

Ann Williams, Wildlife Gardening Project Leader for North Wales Wildlife Trust led an information session for residents to learn more about the project and wildlife as a whole.

Residents took part in the planting of the wild flowers along with NWH staff, Wildlife Gardening Project Leader, and North Wales Wildlife Trust volunteers.

Emma Briscoe, Assistant Housing Officer at North Wales Housing said:

I am so happy that we have been able to involve Anna at the NW Wildlife Trust in planting a wildflower meadow with our tenants at Eithinog, I have had my eye on this piece of land for some time in the hope that we could do something along these lines.”

It will bring a much needed habitat for bees and insects and have a positive impact on the environment and for the community as a whole. We are hoping that the local school will also be able to use the land for their wildlife projects.”

Iwan Evans, Tenant Participation Co-ordinator, North Wales Housing added:

It has been a successful project and brought about increased engagement with some of the residents.”

Similar events will be advertised on the Events Calendar or you can keep up to date on our Facebook or Twitter page.

Supported Housing showcase key services to vulnerable residents

The Supported Housing department held a drop in partner event to showcase the services and support they provide to tenants.

North Wales Housing is a growing leader of Supported Housing Services, providing excellent services to service users and funders across North Wales.

Lynne Evans, Head of Supported Housing at North Wales Housing explains:

We provide a wide range of supported housing accommodation and support services to vulnerable people across North Wales, including homeless people and rough sleepers, young care leavers, people with mental health issues, and people with learning disabilities.

This event was a great opportunity to meet with partners and funders, reinforce the services we offer and discuss how our accommodation and services can support their clients.”

A number of key local people came along to support the event organised by NWH Scheme Manager Kerry Jones. Attendees including Colwyn Bay Mayor Cllr Doctor Sibani Roy and Cllr Philip Edwards took the opportunity to visit stands by each area of the department, talking with staff and service users.

Lynne Evans, Head of Supported Housing at North Wales Housing said:

Supported Housing Service users were present at the event and attendees took their time to talk to them about their housing journey.

Two present, Peter and Patrick are brilliant examples of how the process at NWH works as both have successfully moved on to live in their own properties independently thanks to the support offer by NWH. Success stories like this makes our jobs worthwhile.”

A number of NWH’s Supported Housing schemes are funded by the Supporting People Programme by Welsh Government. In Wales there has been an ever increasing pressure on this funding, with year-on-year cuts to and more anticipated. Events such as this that encourage more collaboration is crucial to keep the services going.

Lynne Evans, Head of Supported Housing at North Wales Housing said:

We’re supporters of the ‘Let’s keep on Supporting People’ campaign. The aim of the campaign is to secure continued investment in the Supporting People Programme and ensure that people who are marginalised and at risk continue to be protected.”
